BAHAMAS
UAF HURRICANE RESPONSE
As a category 5 hurricane parked itself over parts of the Bahamas for days, UAF volunteers made plans to deliver aid that we knew would be desperately needed.
After Hurricane Dorian finally moved away, we found out just how bad the damage was.
Entire towns were reduced to rubble. One community survived by huddling in crumbling homes, an old school bus and rescuing neighbors in a tiny dinghy.
For the area of Green Turtle Cay, the devastation seemed insurmountable. No electricity. No water. No food or supplies. But the community spirit remained in tact. They only needed a little (or a lot) of help.
UAF joined forces with Captain Brad and Lorraine Carlton and Team M/V Adventure in taking their 55-foot boat, Adventure across rough seas from West Palm Beach, Fl to Green Turtle to deliver supplies and set up home base of help.
UAF volunteers found a suitable structure and helped create a spot where a makeshift kitchen went up with gas grills so that people who were trying to repair their homes and get back to life could eat for free. We are proud to have provided thousands of daily meals at the "Adventure Cafe."
UAF volunteers dug a one-thousand gallon cistern out of the ground, cleaned it and hauled it to the cafe, where it was hooked up to a treated ground water system created by our friends at Water Mission. Our crews also erected tents for those who had no homes left, equipped them with water filters, solar lights and regularly distributed food.
UAF is now working with Team M/V Adventure to help families in Green Turtle Cay rebuild a necessity for daily life: their homes and kitchens. Click here to learn more about how you can join us!
