UAF EARTHQUAKE RESPONSE
In April of 2015 massive earthquake struck Nepal, killing 9,000 people, injuring 20,000 and as one local partner put it, "tearing down the hearts of the Nepalese people."
With help and contacts from Boston-based board member Shri Lamichhane, UAF volunteers traveled to Nepal to deliver tarps, solar lights, lentils, rice, salt and even some chocolates for the kids. The team quickly assembled medical assistance with local nurses and found the people in Nepal were eager to help their neighbors in the mountainous regions who had yet to receive help. The team navigated rain, hail storms and mud on treacherous roads to deliver the needed aid.
As the team made its way through the villages they found destruction all around. Houses and family compounds that had stood for decades had collapsed, with entire families living on the ground.
The team helped with tarps and tents, but vowed they would return with construction materials.
Two more teams arrived in Nepal to build shelter for those who no longer had homes. With help from Anil Lamichhane, who coordinated the supplies and arranged transportation, UAF volunteers were able help dozens of families, many of who are still living in the "temporary" homes.
In the years since, Anil and other volunteers have represented UAF in distributing food, tarps, and mosquito netting to victims of devastating floods, offering help and hope to those who were once again in crisis.
Anil describes United Aid Foundation like this: "You guys are my inspiration. You all taught me not to wait for an option rather to be the option."
United Aid Foundation is currently in the planning stages for a medical mission to Nepal next year.
